Derisory Beckford bid shows Everton have become a joke
Leicester City have made a formal offer, believed to be in the region of £2.5m, for Everton forward Jermaine Beckford according to sources close to Sky Sports News.
Everton’s scarcity of funds is well known and indeed shamefully apparent given the distinct lack of new arrivals at Goodison during the summer.
But when Leicester City have the audacity to even try and pinch a player who finished top scorer in all competitions for Everton last season for such a pittance; it is a devastating indictment of the state the club currently finds itself in.
Simply put, Everton have become a joke which is why clubs like Leicester City - and similarly Arsenal over Jagielka and Spurs over Neville in January – will continue to try their luck.
Bad, bad times to be a Blue and something has got to give.
David Moyes continues with his method of hibernation and has taken the silent treatment to extremes this summer.
He questioned his board in the summer of 2008 – before he penned his lucrative £3m per annum contract in the October – and cited he would not accept second best and that Everton needed five or six players.
Robert Elstone is hurting over criticism about the club’s growth commercially, slapping his own back about this and that record deal. Everton have also received an additional £30m from the new broadcasting deal and the sales of Bellefield, Pienaar and Vaughan; David Moyes has had nothing. Any other manager would have been kicking the door down about having such a threadbare squad.
Bill Kenwright has described David Moyes as his ‘God’. A man that could manage Barcelona or Real Madrid. He would never dream of sacking him and in any case the club are in no position to financially do so.
He put pressure at the door in 2008 before he penned a five year deal, the situation in 2011 is arguably much worse.
It’s time David Moyes rediscovered his voice and utilised his strong position.

You are allowing your pessimism to colour everything. A club trying a low-ball bid is our fault?! Lots do it all the time and will continue to do so. We ourselves do it, doesn’t mean anything about the selling club and these speculative bids are rarely accepted.
Try to remember that not all that is ill with the universe is bill kenwright’s fault.
If anything, getting 3 million for a free transfer that has only been with us for a year and is still unproven would be good business. He is obviously not first choice in DMs eyes. Seriously though where has this blog come from? Full of pathetic moaning drivel. You should be ashamed. Call yourselves a blue? Get behind your team. Beckford will find his feet, as will the rest of the team, with or without the money u keep going on about.
In the last 6 months the following ‘bigger’ clubs or clubs near our stature have sold their star player(s) for big money…
Arsenal – Fabregas, Nasri probably
Aston Villa – Young, Downing
Liverpool – Torres
Sunderland – Bent, Henderson
Newcastle – Carroll, Enrique, Nolan
Not to mention Wigan selling N’Zogbia and Spurs probably selling Modric by the end of the window.
We have sold no-one. This is why we have no money and largely why these clubs have money.
Instead of looking at the positives of us keeping all of our players when the majority have weakened, you focus on this perceived slight, that you have deduced by reading a story on the news!
You have taken a club bidding for our player, and extrapolated from this that the world perceives us to be a joke. This shows a lot more about you the author’s warped view of the world than anything that is evident in the bid.
Sean, how on earth would getting £3m for a player who scored 10 goals when not even given a run in the side be good business?
I mean, obviously you can see a bunch of forwards that we are obviously blessed with who are so much better?
Call yourself a blue? You fucking tit.
3 million for Beckford. I’d snap Leicester’s hand off and use the money as a down payment for a forward who’s 2nd is touch is not always a tackle. Beckford is shite. End of.
Why do some people try and be as negative as they can while pretending to be financial experts.
What a joke.
I am bidding two bags of crisps for Messi, Barcelona are a joke……….
Beckford did well for a player in his first season in the top flight. 10 goal return for a free transfer is good business.Id say he’ll get 15+ this year with the right support.
Get behind your team for f**ks sake and stop moaning. We have got no money, correct, does that make our current squad a joke???? I dont think so….
Cant wait for QPR this Saturday! COYB
There are plenty of things to criticise our board for, but selling players below value isn’t one of them.
Lescott, AJ, McFadden, Kilbane, Bent…,all sold for good money given their abilities. We even got 4m plus back for Beattie!
I’d be very surprised if Moyes considered this supposed bid. If they offer the same for Yak that might be another matter
Come on lads!
Whilst we all feel frustrated with our current financial predicament let us not lose the underlying pride of being of blue blood.
Lets not lay all the blame on Blue Bill after he saved us from the Johnson era. Easy to have a bout of memory loss.
We have a good squad although maybe short in a couple of areas and a manager that all but the top two would love at their helm.
Lets get behind the lads and punch weigh above our weight once again!!
COYB !!!!!!
Gary
Ive watched Everton for 50 years and the wally that called Beckford Shite wants to have a good look at himself. Now Bernie Wright that was shite. Finished article? no but 10 goals for nothing? Hes an absolute diamond in the rough, stick with him and put some pace and guile in and around him and watch! Oh by the way Tony Hibbert thats a shite footballer for more modern day comparison
Zealotry. Using any scrap of information to promote previously held views. Fail
Staveros where do you get off calling someone a “Fucking tit”
I would assume you are old enough to know better and I find it hard to belive that they still let you write for this site when you will just go on and slate people in such a childish way….
That aside I think that this reported bid for Becks has been lost in translation somewhere and is more likely to be for the Yak and the media have just juiced this up and changed it for Becks, Becks wouldn’t drop a league for starters and Leicester/Forest must know we wouldnt sell for anything less than say 6m (even then id be suprised)
Hi Liam, I called that tit a tit because of the nonsensical insulting drivel that his post contained. Anyone who throws things like “call yourself an Evertonian” and “you are a kopite” around deserves at least that tag in my opinion. It’s fucking braindead and pathetic and pretty much sums up the level of intellect that we are dealing with when people have to resort to that.
I did have to chuckle at your comment about “them” ‘letting me write on this site. I think you are missing something.
Stop whinging! I think we’ll have a great season.
We have a the players, we just need better luck with injuries. Our team can beat anyone. We’ve proved it.
I like being the paupers and not the plaything of a rich twat who doesn’t give a fuck!
A poor post but borne out of frustration methinks.
I am sure there are many other good Everton fans who tire of the tedious vitriol that pours from the keyboard of the arrogant tit who calls himself Staveros. He who gobs off insultingly to all whose opinions differ from his own but employs censorship on that other site to prevent the same tactic being employed against his views.
I
Stavros, if DM entertains the idea of making money from his squad rather than keeping it together (as he is doing) then selling beckford for a 3 million profit is good business. I personally would give him a run in the team, but blogs like this are constantly droning on about the lack of funds that DM has to offer, and now it’s all about outrageous bids for our unproven striker….. Tit? I have absolutely every right to question peoples right to be a blue when pathetic blogs like this exist? And why? Because authors like the one that gave us this Beckford gem are too busy reading the mirror and wallowing in some bitter little ditch whilst the rest of us actually might just want to talk about more pressing matters like ‘how many goals are we going to put past QPR?’ grow up lad !
what other site MrT? I think it’s clear from some of the posts on here that criticism of Tim Cahill is nothing to do with ‘frustration’.
There are an increasing number of people who can apply common sense and a decent technical understanding of the game and can see that football has moved on from this type of player.
I don’t doubt that there will always be an element of our fanbase who prefer graft over class, and who see ability where there is none….I suspect for the simple reason that they can personally associate more with this kind of ‘quality’. You know, like ‘Hibbo’ and the emperors new clothes himself before him, Lee Carsley. Players who would bash their head on pipes for the cause, but who are ultimately technically extremely shite.
Personally i’m just at the point where i’ve given enough to this club over the years and I want a bit back. I want to be entertained, I want to see players with ability instead of the odd 1 here and there and 8 water carriers.
Sorry if that makes me a bad blue lar, but I dont have a 12 hour factory shift mentality.
Sean, what ARE you on about? I really don’t think that David Moyes’ aim is to “make a profit” from his squad, do you? I think his aim is a pretty fucking obvious one..to win football matches.
To do that he should be looking to strengthen his squad, and it goes without saying that sometimes ‘sell to buy’ is the best way to do that.
When you are selling someone like Rooney for £30m or Lescott for £24m, I can absolutely see the benefit..because you know you can go out and buy 4 or 5 players with that money.
With Beckford though, what you are saying is absolutely senseless. Beckford, at present, looks to be one of only TWO strikers that are in serious contention for a place, as the Yak now seems completely disregarded.
That being the case, and Saha being made of balsa wood, what exactly is your masterplan that we would do with this princely sum of just £3m that would improve upon Beckford’s 10 goal return??
Frankly, it is an idiotic idea with no sense behind it whatsoever. I dont think you have thought it through in any way have you, lets be honest.
Stavros, IF, IF Davy wants to make money from his squad. Obviously he doesn’t. READ BEFORE YOU SPOUT.
So the ‘if’ means that you didn’t subsequently write “then selling Beckford is good business”?
Whether your scenario is hypothetical or not is irrelevant, the point remains that unless you can suggest someone better than Beckford that we could sign for £3m then it’s an indefensibly stupid suggestion…even hypothetically.
And if the ‘if’ makes everything that comes thereafter completely irrelevant, than I have to ask why bother writing it in the first place?
And Stavdros, who says I want us to sell Beckford….? I’m not happy that we didn’t add to our forward line, but at least I’m getting behind the boys instead of spouting bitterness. I just think this blog and its author need to stop waffling on about shite. Why don’t you just admit to us all that it’s probably u that wrote this billocks and be done with it?
Beckfords alright and while anechibe is at the club we would be daft to let beckford go,he isn’t perfect and there are some clear holes in his overall game but he is probably the most useful striker we have over the course of a season considering saha’s fitness and yakubus fatness. Also we are not in a position to be getting rid of anyone unless it generates enough revenue to bring in one or two quality replacements, all this chat about selling him “good business” is lovely apart from the fact that evertons business is actually about winning football matches. fair play to leicesters ambition though
Staveros, explain to me what I am missing? are you saying that this is your site and you are “them” ? If so it makes me wonder even more about the integrity of SOS as a whole.
Its no wonder that Kenwright and his cronies won’t entertain you lot when your going round saying things like that.
Its a real shame that you needed to call someone a tit to get your point across, that was my only point…
spot on scott ,some of the so called big money clubs have sold ,by keeping the players we ended last season with is one hell of a result for all us blue,s ,even the yak and yobo probably can still do a job for us sometime this season ,with the kids coming through as well things are not all bad ,lets wait and see ,but i like many others would like an answer to the philip green thing ,i always thought he was deeply involved in spurs and is that the reason arry seems follow everton,s every move
It’s pointless flogging Beckford whether you rate him or not as any fee recieved will just disappear like the Pienaar,Vaughan cash and the £8m we raised from selling Bellefield.
Fuck Off Kenshite. I fucking hate you. Your a complete gobshite who is miles worse than Johnson EVER was.
What a crock of you know what.
Who cares if they offered 3 mil, or 3 quid for that matter, they can offer what they want, Becks won’t be going. Sure his first touch isn’t always the best but he can improve that, what he does have is an uncanny abiloity to get into good positions and arrive where and when required. 10 goals for starters wasn’t a bad effort. And suppose we did take 3 mil, what are we gonna get with 3 mil anyway?? nothing even close to the potential that we already have in Becks. I was not initially that keen on him but we gotta give the lad a chance to prove himself. I can’t believe all the whiongey shite I am reading here, I hoipe this year is the apposite to last!! all pre-season was super hypoed, gonna do this gonna do that and we were, well shite mainly until Christmas, so this year with all the doom and gloom, lets hope we knock the crap outta the ‘oops on Saturday and take it from there, we haven’;t sold anyone and have a very decent solid squad with some great young talent coming through. C O Y B
I see you didn’t answer anything I said at 6.57pm Staveros? Care to reply? Care to explain how the only clubs making a net spend are the shite, City and United, and every other around us is making a net profit, yet you feel the need to criticise?
If things don’t change at Everton real quick I’ll bet we will be a championship side within the next 3 seasons.
The constant negative vibes being given out by this website are really starting to bore me now. Everton in crisis….six consecutive top eight finishes without having risked everything on a sugar daddy? some crisis. Ask West Ham, Birmingham and Portsmouth fans, whose clubs all have had suggar daddys recently if they would swap places with penniless Everton? The financial problems Everton have today were sown by the board of our most successful side who failed to invest on success wisely and then spent a fortune on poor players and poor managers. Sad to say that sharing a city with the Rs and not having a stadium built for us by the Commonweath games or IOC means we are not an attractive investment. Perhaps in that sense we are victims of our own history, we’re not small enough to buy without a new stadium already being in place. I’ll happily watch top eight finishes if it keeps us out of the winding up courts.
Reading this thread, bored and frustrated me; especially Stavros throwing his kebabs at everyone and everyone else, throwing them back – actually I lost the plot there.
Steve – 8-46am 17/08/11. Anyway, your comments, although not in answer directly to the thread, were decent; so I am going to repeat them, because I cannot be arsed commenting on the others.
The first part of one of your sentances anyway,
“The financial problems Everton have today were sown by the board of our most successful side who failed to invest on success wisely” – QED.
I and many others have made the same comment around the sites, covering assets (stadia, training, retail, etc), fan base and recruitment, marketing in general and the list is endless. Of course it helps, knocks down barriers if the team is succesful, but fuck me – we could have done so much more.
One example – tour of USA and who was not there as a marketing tool ? How many fans watched our game vs manure games ?
Everton is our life BUT it is also a business. Most business’ of the larger size, including Everton are run by more than one person – although I agree, the buck must stop somewhere.
In business “cash flow” is king. Also in business, sometimes you need to “speculate to accumulate” – unfortunately these 2 factors + others often lead to a catch 22 situation, WHICH WE ARE IN. The fucking banks should take alot of the blame if the truth be known; bastards, it is they that cut our overdraft down by 5 million not BK.
Anyway, we need to keep every striker we have – we cannot loose another, however some of you feel, until, we are strong enough financially to buy a decent one and not some has been “just because”.
COYB – IMWT – we will all be happier after a 5-0 at the weekend.
“In the last 6 months the following ‘bigger’ clubs or clubs near our stature have sold their star player(s) for big money…”
…..and reinvested the funds. We sell, and big blue luvvie dickhead pays back the bastard banks.
We need to make money. That means evertonians loading up on everton merchandise, and selling the club far and wide. But its a plan too far for Bill, he’s totally clueless like most of the fans. Stop living in your little blue havens and get out and spend some money on the blues.
We would only become a joke if these bids are accepted. It’s not Everton’s fault Sven wants to spend more money on grooming kids then he does on buying Beckford, we can’t stop the bids coming in at a low price. So stop being a pessimistic prick and sucking wotsits at your ma’s lady trout.
yes we have no money why because the board as done nothing but line they own pocket we are playing OPR and they are on the verge of a billionaire takeover what gone wrong with club sack the board and the way we are going we will loss our best players and manager in the near future doom and gloom
Please stop writing these negative articles. We have the same squad we had last year when we all fancied a top 4 finish. We’re not a selling club but unfortunately we’re not currently a buying club.
Kopites whinge and whine; we’re Evertonians we’re better than that.
Let’s get behind the team and show a united front.
I have to agree with the points made here, just because someone makes a joke offer doesn’t mean we’re a joke, it means they are.
staveros , been reading your replies to people who dare have different opinion to you . you really are a nasty piece of work , just read back some of the comments you have made to people , absolutely shocking . hang your head in shame
go away kenwright lovers your not wanted
Scott why stop the negative articles .What is positive at the moment for everton fc, there is no money, No direction ,and the board don’t want to communicate with the fans ,I try to keep positive for the lads for saturday game, and hope the result come our way against QPR. And tonight QPR as been takeover by billionaire first season back in the premiership, and how does QPR attract investment and can they advise billy kenwright because he as not got a clue how to sell the club ,it is still up for sale yet again . I think the board should hang they heads out in shame they are destroying the the club .
This has obviously been written by a young fan (i hope) and shouldn’t be taken seriously..
This whinging drivel doesn’t help the Blues. If we haven’t got any money to buy players so what. What do this shower want – put the club into loads of debt and run the risk of doing a Leeds. You probably don’t even go to the match. Why don’t you go out and buy yourselves a £20k fitted kitchen on your credit card and wreck your sad life and leave the loyal supporters to cheer on the Blues. Call yourselves supporters. COYB
