SOS Comment: Baines exclusion a disgrace
It was with some dismay that I managed to climb out of bed this afternoon and tune into Sky Sports News to see their sources claiming that Leighton Baines was all but set to miss out on a place on the plane to South Africa this summer at the hands of the vastly overrated Stephen Warnock.
At first, I choked on my Cheerios as the news broke, unable to believe that Baines, a prime contender for the club’s Player of the Year award, was astonishingly snubbed by Fabio Capello (I’ll have some of what he’s been smoking) in preference to a defender who made mistake after mistake towards the end of the season. But then again, I shouldn’t really be surprised. It seems for Evertonians, England seems to be a cancer amongst our football club.
England, in my eyes, are the great pretenders of international football, and I cop a fair bit of stick for speaking out against ‘our country’. Yet I don’t see England as ‘my country’, I come from a family of a proud Liverpool-Irish heritage, and I couldn’t care less about the national team.
The boring patriotism we get rammed down our throats before major tournaments is sickening. Their followers, waving St George’s flags and humming songs that bear no relevance whatsoever to football (A-Team, Great Escape), sickens me.
People who belt out the vomit-inducing ‘God Save Our Queen’ especially sicken me (like him or not, Wayne Rooney will always have my respect for remembering his roots and not caving in to singing it). If that is people’s idea of ’supporting your country’, then you can stick it up your arse.
I say England is a ‘cancer’ for Everton because in the past, it has caused nothing but unrest and destabilisation. Francis Jeffers. Nick Barmby. Wayne Rooney. Joleon Lescott. The list goes on and on of players who have represented this club and have never came back. Once an Everton player pulls on an England shirt, it seems, that’s it. That is just one reason why I couldn’t care less about the national team.
Another reason for my hatred of the team is the fact they seem to pick players based on the clubs they represent rather than any real footballing ability. Take Darren Bent, enjoying a fine debut season at Sunderland, scoring near to 30 goals. He has been overlooked for the astonishingly abysmal Emile Heskey of media darlings Aston Villa, a player who looks so far out of his depth as a footballer; he represents hope to anyone with little ability hoping to make it in the game.
Then we have Scott Parker, a very good player for West Ham this year being overlooked by the lumbering Tom Huddlestone of Tottenham. Clive Tyldsley labelled him a ‘classy, cultured footballer’. Personally, I think he’s about as useful as a cock-flavoured lollipop. And he reminds me of a tugboat. Huddlestone’s club team mate Michael Dawson was one of the most commanding centre backs in the Premier League this season, and I will go to my grave never understanding the reason that the hoof-loving, past-it Jamie Carragher was selected instead, a player who vowed ‘never again to answer England’s call’. Played Fabio.
After all the talk and all the speculation then, Capello has picked a squad of 23 that he thinks is good enough to win the World Cup. I’m sure Spain, Brazil, Argentina and co. will be shitting themselves at the thought of coming up against Gareth Barry. Once again, England won’t win the World Cup. They will flatter to deceive. And they will probably lose on penalties (again), making an even bigger mockery of a nation who thinks they possess a divine right to win every honour available.
To sum up the joke that is the English national team, Jimmy Bullard and Joey Barton won more caps than Howard Kendall did when he played. Laughable.
So Bainesy, if you’re reading this – forget about that shower. Go home, throw a few Desperados in the freezer, put your feet up and take a well-earned break and we’ll see you back here in August. You won’t be missing much in South Africa, I guarantee it. We all know you’re a fine footballer, and as long as you continue to do the business in the Royal Blue, then that is all we care about.
England need you more than you need them, lad.

Kev, Leigton Baines has had 1 bad game in about the last 2 years, was the top assisting defender in the Prem last year & as stated above was a definite contender for evertons player of the season & to call him lazy shows uve bin on the mushrooms mate,
Baines is a consistant threat down the left wing & was left with Gerrerd wondering from Left Mid wen playin for england..
Baines did have a bad game against mexico, as did Rio, Gerrerd, King, Walcott, King & Carrick to name a few – for baines to miss out to a Left-back whose form has been inconsistant at best towards the end of the & international career consists of an 8 minute cameo against Trinidad 2 yeards ago is a Disgrace

You say Warnock is vastly over rated, by who exactly? If anything it’s the other way around, he has had a great season, slacked towards the end whilst carrying an injury and the Villa team let slip a few easier points. Everton on the other hand had a great finnish and so Baines looked favourite.
Either player could handle this role and I wouldn’t be dissapointed with either playing the stand in left back role, but for me, admittedly as a Villa fan Warnock just edges it for his abbility to attack from the back.
What do you base – hes “overrated” on. And please do tell me of all these mistakes hes mades. When? Against who? Really… go ahead.
The spot was there for the taking but Baines was truly awful against Mexico. The reason he’s not off to South Africa is Leighton Baines. What’s his international pedigree BTW?
Aston Villa aint media darlings its Martin O’ Neill who’s the media darling.
Warnock got injured in March and thus had a pretty ropey last few
months of the season. But come off it, he’s twice the defender Baines is and also has the added bonus of being able to play quite comfortably on midfield. As for Villa being media darlings, AS IF! They never give us any credit

But you’re right about one thing; we have no chance of winning the WC.
There were no great performances against Mexico but I agree that Baines hammered the nails into his own coffin with his homesick comments. However, I really don’t think the originator’s anti-English comments are helpful. His loyalties might well lie with the Liverpool Irish community but his comments were disgraceful. If it’s so bad over here perhaps he should consider moving across the Irish Sea.
Villa are being set up for a fall by the british media, thats the only reason the media ever back anything.

As a Villa fan I actually agree that Baines is probably the better player and is extremley unfortunate not to be going to SA, Warnock has been very poor for us since Christmas really. Don’t agree with the ‘media darlings’ tag you give us however, all the media seem to is conjure up made up c**p stories about our top players leaving for the real media darlings Spurs and Man City.
To be fair though it doesn’t really matter which one goes, neither will get a game, neither will Carragher, King etc, if they do get a game it will be a cameo if even that.
You do have a point about all the patriotic rubbish that is rammed down our throats though, especially when do many media outlets seem to be supporting us one minute then doing anything to upset the applecart as soon as possible. The 1966 stuff is particularly annoying, do they not know that most ‘England fans’ were not even thought of when we last won the world cup! why did capello pick a washed up right back (callagher) who turned his back on england, he will be taken apart by anyone with speed and resort to bringing them down whenever he’s beaten, i am serious when i say if capello wants an old right back then he should have gone for gary neville who’s twice as good as carragher, what a sad day for english football now more than ever i hope they fail to win their group, maybe gerard needs someone to cuddle up to at night and jamie fits the bill

Let’s be honest. Anybody rating Warnock over Baines is a fool.
People bang on about ‘homesickness’ – absolute bollocks. Steven Gerrard admitted in his book that he was homesick during a torunament. He still played, and he played well. I’d love to see these quotes of Baines being homesick because I certainly haven’t seen them.
As for Steve, that’s what I mean mate. Alls you hear is how ‘we still believe’ and all that, it’s nauseating. I think we share your frustrations of your players being linked away, it’s been non-stop at Goodison this summer!
Baines – better going forward than warnock, possibly. But all to similar to another Villa left back who previously played for England, Nicky Shorey. Good left foot, decent player, but occasionally pushed off the ball too easily and prone to a few clangers. Warnock is one of those 7/10 players every week, with Baines you might get an 8, but you will probably get a few 4 or 5s. As neither will be anything but backup for Ashley Cole, its defensive solidarity every time for me.
Must admit that i thought Baines would get the nod, he was certainly the better of the two when the teams met at Villa Park towards the end of the season.
As for Villa being media darlings, you really don’t have a clue! We’ve been in the back water for years and we were regularly the last game on match of the day!
Hardly a disgrace when you effectively talk your way out of the final selection – bit silly to talk publicly about homesickness if you want to be taken seriously as an international. But England’s loss is EFC’s gain and that’s what matters. Baines will now get a rest and be fresh for next season, and opportunity to further enhance his reputation playing for us, as will Victor and Jags. Unfortunately we still risk having the 2 Tims, Peanuts, Yobo and Yak returning knackered, injured or worse having their heads turned.

He was a contender for are player of the year & behind Cashley is probs the best attacking full back in the prem (top assisting defender last season). I agree warnock is probs stronger in the tackle but baines is far better going forward, a better crosser, although poor against mexico has good posistioning and can take a penalty…warnock has played 8 minutes for England (2 years ago)..how can u justify him going the world cup

Warnock is an Everton Fan I believe ? He is also a far braver sturdier tackler than Baines . Lets be honest neither of them would get a game anyway unless Cole is injured.

It is only really Villa fans who want Warnock in the squad. Baines offers much more than Warnock and if you can’t see that Baines is the better left back then you know nothing. Baines has been consistently good for Everton and was the most effective left back in the PL last season. Warnock is an average left back playing for one of the most overrated teams in the World.

To be so insistant on Baines being the most effective left back in the PL last season smacks of rose tinted glasses, if you had taken the time to watch other players in the position you would know that Warnock was also a consistant left back. Baines looked great at times but as someone pointed out, along with the 8′s you’ll also get 4′s and 5′s from him, Warnocks never going to be a world beater but his reliability never wains.
Try looking at it from an international perspective rather than a club vs club thing.
Maybe Baines just can’t cut it at International level, Villa fans know this kind of thing all too well. Ashley Young at times looks like a 30 million player but he’s never don’t owt for England, it’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

The question is, if you dislike England so much, why are you so bothered that Baines has been excluded from the squad? You’ve even said it yourself, England apparently causes instability at Everton so I take it you should be happy that he hasn’t been included in the squad. So the whole article is a contradiction of itself.
Baines said he was homesick; that’s unfortunately the end of his story. Stephen Warnock is the obvious replacement. Not sure why Capello continues to select Heskey but it’s hardly that Aston Villa are hardly media darlings, in fact they can’t even win over the local media.

My main issue with the selection is, why not try Warnock out in a match? If Warnock, with his 10 minutes of international football, was Capello’s first-choice back-up left back, why not give him some more experience on the international pitch? Maybe Bainesy shot himself in the foot with the homesickness comment but at the same time, why go for a pretty much untested player (in the international games)?
Dan, how many assists did Warnock get for Villa last season? Being ‘reliable’ doesn’t make you a great player does it? Baines is much better going foward than Warnock and equally as good in his defensive duties. People are saying he was poor against Mexico, lets count how many bad games Lampard, Gerrard and other players have had for England shall we? Does that mean they shouldn’t be in the squad? No one is saying Warnock is bad, I would rather have him than most left backs in this league but to say he is better than Baines is laughable and Baines deserved that WC place more than most. Who to trust. A manager and coach who earns more in a week then any of us could dream of, has won major trophies everywhere he has managed as some of the biggest teams in the world and has seen every player in the 30 man squad in training over the past 2 weeks. As well as training for the past 2 years and has watched more games with said England players then any of us.

Fella_25 I base the opinion he may not cut it at international level on the fact that he was poor against Mexico (nopt saying that should have ruled him out whatsoever but with so few opportunities to prove yourself chances need to be taken) & by reading his quotes (if true) about home sickness, you can’t go and represent your country in South Africa for a few weeks feeling low and depressed, it wouldn’t work.
I’m sure many Everton fans would say the same about our Ash who has been given a couple of chances but failed miserably every time to produce anything when pulling on the england shirt. Playing for club he’s top drawer but after seeing him play for england i’m not all that annoyed he hasn’t been selected.
Like I said before, we need to look at this from an international perspective. It’s about how the chosen few gel together as a team and how they go about getting the results for the nation, not just Liverpudlians, Brummies or anyone for that matter, christ, Heskey is absolute sh*te for the Villa but he works well with Rooney, thats why he’s in.
It’s the end of the season, club football is in the past and it’s time to get together and pull in the right direction as England fans if we want to bring back that long forgotten cup!

you fail to take into consideration several things –
warnock can play (albeit not convincingly) as a holding midfielder, baines said he gets homesick and was awful against mexico, take this into consideration (because it certainly looks the case with theo and huddlestone) baines got a game not because capello liked the look of him, but because he wasnt convinced and wanted to double check
scott parker looked great for west ham last season, so could just about anyone! I’ll pay the toffees a compliment, osman would have looked mind blowing for west ham last season, just about all of your midfield would have done, huddlestone is alot better
and as heskey, the stats dont lie, he doesnt score and he is awful for villa, but they also say that we had the best qualifying round ever and that rooney has scored 9 goals in his last 10 games with heskey but only 2 without him
bent looks like he suffers from the same problem as cole and phillips, scores for fun in the prem but never looks like making the step up at international level
How is Carragher “past-it”? Ok he may not have had the best season of his career this season, but the simple fact is that he can play anywhere along the back four. He is still a competent player and deserves to be given a place in the squad. He may have turned his back on the international team however he’s had a change of heart and you can’t go against him because of it. He was frozen out by the last manage when he was at the peak of his career!! I doubt England will win the World Cup myself because of some of the ridiculous choices in the squad this time around. How can Heskey get in the squad over Bent?!?! Bent might not have been amazing at international level so far but come on Heskey?!?! Baines should have been left out of the squad in my opinion and so should have Warnock, Dawson and Adam Johnson should have been included instead.

Anyone saying Baines is clearly better than Warnock is clueless. Warnock was arguably Villas best player at the start of last season and if it wasn’t for his injury would have been a nailed on member of the squad. It was the injuries that caused his dip in form for the 2nd half of the season. Maybe if Baines was more of a man and not complained of homesickness, he’d have had a better chance of making the 23. Baines was shocking against Mexico, regardless of not getting much help off Gerrard. Warnock is the better player.

I do agree that Baines finished the year on a much greater run of form, he was sensational and showed everybody why Moyes was right to go for him.
To say though that they are miles apart is just untrue, Warnock had a tougher end to the season but he also showed excellent ability covering for a physically and mentally tired side.
To choose between them is difficult but if it comes down to experience and mental toughness age and time at the top does on many occasions get the nod.
Everton should be gutted, Baines should be gutted but to say Warnock was not deserving is utter nonsense, Warnock is a great player with real heart and ability wherever and whenever he plays and that is one of the reasons he was up there for consideration with another extremely qualified contender.

Some of his selections are completely baffling. To take Heskey who couldn’t score in a brothel, and leave Bent behind, and then take Upson and Carragher, its no wonder Baines was left behind. IF we get through the group stages, I can’t see us lasting much longer. Scott Parker a much better bet than Barry, who needs is that slow he needs 50 yds to turn round in.

I think it says it all when capello said that warnock had done enough to impress him in training so if warnock impressed more in training than baines did in 2 friendlies so maybe thats why hes not on the plane!baines looked a bundle of nerves in the mexico game and i wouldnt want to rely on someone that cant handle the pressure.just because baines played ahead of warnock in the games that doesnt mean capello rated him more.maybe he was already impressed with warnock and wanted to see if baines would impress even more and he obviously didnt!

I’m glad Baines hasn’t gone, he wouldn’t have got a look in with Cole there and it would have cut down his rest time for next season, we pay his wages and we want him at his best for us, sod England, it’s a click anyway.

I still think there is a clique among the England players. Gerrard and Callagher have been holding hands throughout training. Maybe Carra has lost his satnav. Warnock is a mate of Gerrards as well. Maybe a word or two in Mr Capello’s ear. Then theres the Cockney clique from Chelsea.
Capello has picked a player to do a job, which is defensive cover for Cole.
I certainly don’t think that many other fans would say that it was a ‘disgrace’ that warnock was picked. They are fairly similar in ability with baines better attacking, and warnock better defensively.
There’s one thing seeing the world through blue tinted glasses but some of you need to get real. Seems that most on here are too partisan to know what happens in the rest of the premiership outside the blue half of stanley park and rely on making up paranoid conspiracies about liverpool cliques.

To be fair Bainsey came across as a bit of a wet lettuce. He looked terrified in defence against mexico and then he comes out and says oooh i’m going to be awfuly homesick if I go to South Africa. The lad needs a kick up the arse because his chance to go SA was there but he failed to grasp it. He should have gone out, played positive football like he does for us and said how much he is looking forward to the prospect of playing on the world stage. It’s like applying for a job abroad and being too scared to talk in the interview apart from the end where you tell them if you get the job you are worried about being homesick!
england should take a container of crutches with them seeing how many players not fit they selected for the world cup. Ferdinand, terry, king, ashley cole, gerard, rooney and others. The true fact is that the final selection is made by the fa and not capello. Used to admire the man but no more.
To sum up, as a Villa supporter I wouldn’t swap Warnocks right foot for Baines. And you lot seem happy with him. All’s good then
