SOS League Cup Preview: Talk is cheap
Often derided as a second-rate competition useful to Premier League sides only for trying out youth players and reserves, the Carling Cup nonetheless maintains some allure.
The Blues kick off their Carling Cup campaign at home to Huddersfield tomorrow night, hoping that 2011 will the year that the club finally ends its League Cup hoodoo.
Everton have never won the League Cup, and the 1995 FA Cup win over Manchester United was the last major trophy to grace Goodison Park.
The closest we have came to League Cup glory was in 1977 and 1984, when the Blues lost in replays both to Aston Villa and Liverpool respectively. David Moyes guided his class of 2008 to the semi-final stage but were defeated over two legs by Avram Grant’s Chelsea.
The players and manager at Everton have been doing an awful lot of talking this year, every week we read it on the website. “We’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do that” etc. Talk, as they say, is cheap. Actions speak louder than words.
Tomorrow is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how seriously we are taking this competition. Take it to them boys, play it the School of Science way and lets send out the message that Everton Football Club will not settle for anything less than a trip to Wembley on Sunday February 27th.

What team would people play?
It’d be the ideal opportunity to give Rodders & Coleman their first run out of the season and I’d like Beckford to be given the chance to boost his confidence against a lower league team…
Mucha
Coleman
Heitinga
Distin
Baines
Pienaar
Rodwell
Arteta
Bilyaletdinov
Beckford
Yakubu
Strong team, first hurdle on the Road to Wembley.
GK. Mucha. RB. Coleman. LB. Baines. CB. Johnny & Distin. DefM. Fellaini. LM. Gueye. RM. Pienaar. CenM. Rodwell. AttM. Bilyaletdinov. Forw. Beckford. Subs. Howard, Jags, Hibbo, Arteta, Ossie, Cahill and Saha.
I’d go along with most of that Paul but I don’t think Arteta’s been on form of late and there’s rumours circulating that he’s 100% fit. Maybe give him a half but I’d like to see Osman have a go in the middle too as his confidence must be dwindling.
I’d defo start Beckford and The Yak, I think it’s about time Moyes tried two up front
To right talk is cheap. I’m fed up with tub-thumping interviews with the likes of Phil Neville, they should do their talking on the pitch.
I never fancy us the this competition. The League Cup has been nothing short of disaterous for us since we last reached the final in 1984 and we’ve suffered loads of embarrassing defeats along the way. Its time we put this right.
Whatever happens Moyes has to give Coleman a run out and the new keeper. I’d forget about playing the Yak as its obvious he has no future. Beckford should play and Bily needs to be benched after his ‘efforts’ on satdee.
Haha, think the players showed all you nay sayers what they can really do.
MOYES OUT….Hahahah
