Anichebe picks up groin injury for Nigeria
Victor Anichebe has picked up a groin injury on international duty with Nigeria as they cruised to a 2-0 win over footballing giants Madagascar in an African Nations Cup qualifier.
With Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu having been sold on transfer deadline day, the news of Anichebe’s injury will come as a massive blow to David Moyes as he faces the prospect of also having Louis Saha unavailable for the Aston Villa game on Saturday.
That leaves Denis Stracqualarsi – Everton’s new number 11 – and Tim Cahill as the only two potential striking options available.
Colin Udoh confirmed the news of Anichebe’s injury on his official Twitter page.
‘Look away now, Everton fans. Anichebe has picked up something. Looks like groin #EFC’
Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia couldn’t hide his disappointment.
“It’s very unfortunate, but I hope he gets well soon so he can continue to feature for his club. That pitch was not very good and we are lucky our players did not get serious injuries.
“Hopefully, Anichebe will be fine after getting some medical attention. Our thoughts will be with him.”
Anichebe is expected to fly home to England tonight.
