Everton legend Gordon West dies
Everton legend Gordon West has passed away, aged 69.
The first signing of Harry Catterick, Gordon West arrived at Goodison Park from Blackpool in March 1962.
At the time the transfer fee of £27,000 was the highest ever paid for a goalkeeper, but it proved to be an astute piece of business.
Technically brilliant, the Yorkshire-born stopper was also a superb athlete and went onto make 399 appearances for the Toffees. In that time he won two league titles and an FA Cup.
We here at SOS1878 would like to pass on our condolences to Gordon’s family and hope Evertonians come together to celebrate the life and achievements of a true Everton great.

God Bless Gordon, great goalkeeper great person, gave me a trophy 43 years ago, never forgotten how wonderful he was, still got the trophy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family tonight. RIP Gordon.
gordon west was a fabulous goalkeeper.RIP
Genuinely one of the best 2 post-war Everton keepers- only Southall even possibly better, Martyn if had been signed earlier. Nowadays “young” keepers are ridiculously “protected”. GW signed as a 19 yr old & virtually nobody else got a game for a decade… Sleep well
Though a West Ham fan, I idolised West when I was a kid & watched his every move from behind the goals when he came to Upton Park. He prowled his area like a caged lion, his reaction saves were astonishing. It didn’t surprise me when I read he was physically sick before games. RIP a true great.
rip westy a great everton legend god bless mate
