Everton swoop in to steal Rodriguez
The Daily Mirror are reporting that Everton manager David Moyes is making a ‘frantic last-gasp bid’ to sign Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez – and pinch him from under Southampton’s noses.
The England Under-21 international has been discussing terms with the newly promoted Saints for the past two days, with a view to a record £6.5million switch from the Championship Clarets to the Premier League.
However, Alan Nixon has reason to believe that Moyes has now stepped into the chase despite having no money to spend.
He wants Rodriguez to stall on a decision and allow him time to try to get the finances together to bring him to Goodison as a partner for Nikica Jelavic.
Rodriguez has just come back from holiday to walk into a transfer tug-of-war.
Southampton have offered him a lucrative deal, but the chance to stay in the north-west with Everton may sway him.
However, Rodriguez will be taking a gamble if he turns down Saints and waits for Everton as Moyes will have to sell before he can buy – and also has Tottenham’s Steven Pienaar as a ‘priority’ capture.

Everton will be in the PL for a good few years, I don’t think the same can be said for the Saints! No brainer for me Jay.
And where we getting the money for this? I smell bullshit.
think you’ll find Saints have a bit more money than Everton . . . . .
If Rodriguez has ambition, then it has to be the Saints. They are going to be a club challenging at the top within the next few years – they have the infrastructure, ambition and backing. They will no more be “struggling Saints” but lazy journos who have only focused on the Premier league have not been watching what has been going on!
Agree with Mick and Stevo, got to be Saints all the way. Great things happening on the South coast.
If Rodriguez wants to improve as a player, play attractive attacking football and play for England one day then he should sign for the Saints! Southampton are going places!!
Be a pity if he doesn’t wanna come south but that’s his choice…..if he has doubts then we don’t want him ……no hard feelings and moving on
Mick, I think that most premiership teams appear to have more money than Everton, despite us having big gates and a fantastic following. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Next page I will read that Fellaini and Baines are sold! It’s just a nightmare!
“the mirror”
i wouldn’t believe anything printed by that rag.
this is the same paper that makes stuff up on a daily basis when they have nothing to write about.
Stevo think your on drugs mate southampton will be back in the championship this time next year. Everton will ALWAYS be a far far bigger club.
Stevo you talk about the Saints having ambition. Do you think that 4th 5th 5th 6th is relegation?
Stevo are you having a laff son? While Everton may not have any cash if as a player your given the choice of either Everton or saints you would pick Everton all day! Get in the real world.
In the real world, Saints are backed by one of the richest families in Europe and are building an infrastructure to match Europe’s elite. Whilst some might suggest that Norwich and Swansea should be their role models – they are basing themselves on Ajax and Barca. They are going places, and if Rodriguez has ambition, he should “get on the bus” at the first opportunity!
In fairness, I fear for Everton. they ARE a big club but so are a few Championship teams. Everton are not as hot Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea or Man City.
Every time Saints are involved in competition for a player the other team ALWAYS goes on about how big they are as if saints are a tin pot club, its laughable. 26 years in the top flight is not to be sniffed at.
If Jay-Rod comes to Saints it will be because he is more likely to make an impact there. If I were him i would look a Jermaine Beckford and wonder…
Sorry David, It’s you that’s having a laugh son! You’re living on memories and past history. What have Everton won lately – nothing. Saints have the infrastrutcure, elite acadamy, and most importantly, the financial clout! And without that, Everton cannot compete.
Stevo, must admit your comment gave me a laugh. Now put the glue down, there’s a good lad
Firstly, I find this story hard to believe seeing that Everton have no money, but to those saying if he has ambition, he should go to the Saints. No offence lads, but you’re completely delusional. If you think having ambition is to choose a yoyo club over an established epl club.
Of course Adkins is a cracking manager and he may do well in the EPL, but we know how quickly things can change and Southampon may struggle this year.
Let’s be realistic.
Sorry Rob, elite academy? Like Rooney, Rodwell, Barkley, Ball, Jeffers the list goes on and on. You have not been in the top flight for seven years and it was only two years ago you nearly went out of business playing third tier football. Your average gates are in the twenties and the last time you won anything was in 76!We have consistently been in or around the European places, you struggled to come up automatically this year. We are the fourth most successful club in the country, you could well struggle to survive this season. Please there is nothing wrong with optimism especially on the back of promotion but get real.
I guess as a championship player he best go to Saints, as a championship club is what they are and will remain, bottom 3 finish while the toffees challenge for europe AGAIN.
James who are u describing as a yoyo club????dont be too quick write clubs like Southampton off as I believe financial stability over the next few years may prove very important.I am sure your club is financially well run and you have a great manager who will never leave……where would you be without that ??
All you wonderful delusional Saints fans please get off the wacky baccy and come back to earth ! I’m sure if your future was as glittering and gold laden as your making out, most of the country would know about it, not just all the dream factory on the south coast ? By the way, well done on your promotion, you nearly blew it ! That super rich team of the future from Berkshire won the title didn’t they ?
As a massive everton fan I believe that Jay would do well at everton. He would score goals and would be loved. As a Southampton boy born and bred I think Saints wont just surprise a few next year, they will stun them for a good few years to come. They have a huge fan base, masses of cash and a new stadium. its all there for them to become one of the biggers in the league. Top 4 side within 4 years.
For clarity, the Leibherr family who own Saints are the fourth richest owners in the UK. They have just made them debt free by writing off £33m of loans.
They have the money to pay cash for whoever they wish to buy.
The Stadium looks like it will be enlarged on three sides up to 52000 or a new ground built. If they do build a new ground it will be funded by the owners. The stadium will be sold out this year.
There is massive investment going on at the academy/training ground and 41 acres of prime land is owned near Southampton.
We don’t even sell season tickets until June, general sale July and none after the first match. They don’t need the income.
Saints could well be relegated but so could a lot of clubs. In any event when Markus Leibherr bought the club he planned for the Premier in five years two years from now.
That investment is still there to spend on top of any money set aside for the Premier.
Saints have never been a big club, and I doubt they’ll be able to offer 50,000 wages. The saints only average about 26,000,so where’s all this money coming from to turn them into a top prem side. Everton may not have much cash, but their present team are far better than anything the Saints will ever have.I very much doubt Everton are in for Jay,but they were, they no way he’d turn the Toffee’s down for small club like Southampton .
So many toffees on here living in a bubble! Ok so saints nearly went out of business 3 years ago only due to poor chairman.
Saints will be a force to come in the EPL but I’m afraid you will end up going down like we did because you don’t have the money to compete in this league any more
To all those describing Southampton as a yoyo club, you’re being a bit harsh. At least wait till they’ve been relegated first.
@ Rob, we can’t compete without finances? The scalps we took this year; Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City, Newcastle, 4-4 draw with Man U at Old Trafford?? FA Cup semi-final?? My ass we can’t compete.
Blimey wish a lot more Evertonian would step into the realism of Everton situation. We can not compete with the like of Stoke and QPR for money or Southampton! It’s the changing face of football and we are being left behind.
Jay Rodriguez signed for Southampton early this afternoon. Announced on official site saintsfc.co.uk at 1730.
