SOS Sources: Beckford deal done

News Archive | SOS1878 | May 2, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Sources close to SOS are claiming that Jermaine Beckford is all but an Everton player.

The 30 goal Leeds hitman will undergo a medical at Finch Farm when his contract with the promoted League One club expires at the end of June. Personal terms have already been thrashed out and agreed, we are told.

The news will come as a blow to Leeds United’s manager Simon Grayson, who said this week he hoped his star striker would decide to stay after promotion was secured thanks to Beckford’s winner against Bristol Rovers at Elland Road.

The prospect of playing for one of the biggest clubs in British football though, it would seem, is an opportunity too good to turn down for the former product of Chelsea’s youth academy.

Beckford has notched an impressive 71 goals in 125 Leeds appearances.  Evertonians will be hoping for a similar goal return when he arrives on Merseyside.

He’s already playing for one of the biggest clubs in football so that is not the reason. Only 1 reason is dosh cos he’ll barely get off the bench in the premiership

  2. Jim says:

Don’t embarrass yourself any further Yorkshireman.

Everton dwarf Leeds United in every department of what constitutes a big club.

    Now kindly do one.

  3. yorkshireman says:

    only for now jim

  4. Jim says:

    Now, always and forever.

How many league titles have you celebrated? FA Cup?

  5. yorkshireman says:

dunt matter jim what you done in europe

  6. Jim says:

We’ve won a European Cup winners cup, and were cruelly denied the chance twice, as champions, to have a real crack at the European Cup.

You are nothing compared to Everton.

  7. staveros says:

absolutely pmsl at anyone who compares Leeds to Everton. Typical lower league know-nothing numpty.

9 League titles, 5 FA Cups, ECWC.

Of course UEFA Cups are the bread and butter though, not the league title. Not to mention being a regular lower league club whilst Everton have spent more seasons in the top flight than any other club.

That’s why Jermaine wants to come and sit on our bench.

  8. Lee says:

Leeds a bigger club than everton fuckin behave yourself. he would rather warm our bench than play regular championship football. says it all really.

  9. Mark says:

Am a neutral supporter but massive football fan for years and Everton and Leeds are both massive clubs. Nothing much to compare – Leeds probably bigger fan base though but just been through difficult times. They will be back but will only become a big club again imo when Bates leaves. Must easily be the be best investment now out of all clubs though as they have no debt and a massive fan base after bates did the admin scam!!!

  10. Paul Daly says:

Fucks sake, why is there this delusion amongst Leeds and their supporters that they are bigger than fucking everyone?

You were a team of fucking kickers and yard dogs such as Bremner. Me arl fella has told me all about your lot back in the day, lobbing bricks at the train carriages as our lot made their way back home.

Horrible fucking club. Horrible fucking supporters. I genuinely hope you get relegated again next year and get back to where you truly belong.

  11. Paul Daly says:

And Mark, Leeds – bigger fan base?!

Fuck my life. What am I hearing?

  12. Lee says:

I would say there’s no difference in fan base to be honest two well supported clubs Efc sell out every away game and get good gates at home same as Leeds really.Leeds are a big club but they are not as big as everton.even when Leeds were in a champions league semi final they still weren’t bigger than everton.

  13. Paul says:

There’s been a lot said about this. Most of it totaly stupid!! If you had a choice, Premier league or CCC what are you going to choose. . . . Yes thats right PREMIER LEAGUE!!!! And if Everton are a ‘two bob club’ as soft arse bates states, what does that say for Leeds!!!

  14. Scouse4ever. says:

Leeds are undoubted in the top 10 of English clubs in terms of size, but some of there fans overrate their stature as ive heard them on national radio banging on about being in the top 3 in size.

I remember going to Elland road in May 2000 (1-1 barmby the rat scored) and spoke to some of the fans before the game and one said ‘only Man Utd are bigger in world football’!!

  15. Shiny McShite says:

Prolific lower league strikers doing well at the top level isn’t a particularly rich seam. As he’s out of contract, I guess it’s a fairly shrewd, low risk move for EFC.

Beckford is quite capable of speed, touch, cleverness and great finishing. He’s also likely to pout, dive, elbow, show poor first touch, not get his head up, miss sitters. I guess these two strands apply to all strikers, everywhere: the point is the balance between them.

A lot of Leeds fans, as long ago as last season, were doubtful he’d even cut it in the Championship; the leap to the Prem is fucking enormous by comparison.

Don’t think many of us (Leeds fans) begrudge him a go in the Prem. Don’t forget Chelsea binned him off young; we got him from Wealdstone (and a job at the RAC) and even then he had to have a loan season at Scunthorpe before he got any kind of confidence. He’s not a kid, he’s pretty much in his playing prime.

I reckon he’ll probably drive you nuts, if he gets off the bench, but personally I’ve never had a problem with Everton, I wouldn’t mind at all if he does a decent job for you.

  16. Greg Leeds says:

Shame to see it kicking off here between two great clubs of great tradition.
Beckford is leaving us because he wants to play in the top flight. Simple. It’s every footballers dream, he’s not getting younger, and Everton will pay money while Bates will continue to stifle and not support our goals. I wish him well.
Paul, not every Leeds fan thinks their bigger than everyone. Support wise, where we are, we do well, but we’ve just come out of the old division three. No illusions here.
However, if I am looking at it fairly from all counts, your comments about Leeds being kickers and Bremner being a yard dog is just a cheap shot.
Football clubs ALL kicked the s**t out of each other. It was a man’s game. Leeds probably did it the hardest that’s all. No place for the weak in them days. All was fair in football.
And in the last ten years, the only time I’ve suffered any malice was when I got hit by a coin v. Everton at Elland Road. It hit me on the chest, a foot higher would have had my eye out, two foot lower it would have cut my 5 year old daughters head open. But I’m not to judge a club on one idiot.
    Let’s all do the same.
Good luck with you and Beckford next season.
Marching On Together Leeds fans. :)

    Greg.

  17. Lee, Huyton says:

Good shout Greg, Everton’s greatest side contained players like Reid,Bracewell,Sharp,Gray,Van den Hauwe,Ratcliffe who could all mix it when needed as well as play football, same as your great Leeds sides.

It will be good to have you back in the big time one day and bring your usual noisy following to Goodison and fill the away section, unlike some clubs i could mention who are currently in the prem.

  18. One way of getting an idea of how many fans a club has is there website. Leeds were third behing Liverpool and Man U as the most visitied club sites a few years ago.
I would not say though that Leeds has a bigger fan base than Arsenal or Tottenham and Chelsea if not already has a big following.
Everton certainly has a big local following compared to Leeds, who compete with rugby and cricket.

Right now Everton are the more glamorous club to be at, thats obvious, whether Everton could attract players to their club over Leeds if they were in the premier then that would be close in my opinion.

I Live in Hertfordshire, the most supported teams are Man U, Arsenal, tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Watford and West ham.
I have met numerous Leeds fans, Newcastle fans, Celtic & Rangers fans but not 1 Everton fan around here.

  19. Lee, Huyton says:

Dave, Everton have had consistently higher attendances than Leeds for years and they have a City all to themselves, wereas Everton are from Liverpool which is a 2 club City. Doesnt that tell you who has most supporters?

  20. Paul D says:

Sorry Dave Williams but your arguments are the worst on here. who gives a fuck about hits on a website? I don`t go on Everton`s coz there`s better articles elsewhere.
And who gives a fuck about fans in fuckin Hertfordshire? Is that the best argument you can provide?
    Hertfordshire? Seriously?

  21. Phil says:

i only want everton fans from liverpool, whos arsed about hertfordshire?

  22. Lee says:

I know who cares about fans from Hertfordshire.more scouse fans turn up at goodison on a match day than anfield on a match day an that will do for me.

  23. Jro says:

Haha, that first comment made me laugh. Leeds as one of the biggest clubs in football haha.

  24. Rob walker says:

leeds r shyte, beckfords shyte.end of story! everton r a top class PREMIERSHIP (haha) team who shud be buyin top class players.i could score 30 goals in a pathetic league
